The world's most populous city is no longer Tokyo, but Jakarta, Indonesia. According to the United Nations Urbanization Report, when population is calculated based on actual living areas rather than administrative divisions, Jakarta tops the list with about 42 million people, followed by Dhaka in Bangladesh in second place, Tokyo in third place, and Seoul in 10th place with about 22.5 million people. Interestingly, Jakarta and Dhaka are experiencing overcrowding and environmental crises, while Seoul and Tokyo have the opposite problem of declining urban vitality due to population loss and aging. By 2050, Dhaka is projected to be a megacity of over 50 million people, while Seoul is likely to slip out of the top 10. We've entered an era where cities need to think less about "how big" and more about the quality of their demographics, environment, and infrastructure. #jakarta #world's most populous cities #dhaka #seoul #population #urbanization #megacities #united nations urbanization report
